Novel Summary
In the rain-drenched coastal town of Esperanza Bay, former prosecutor Elias Blackwood lives haunted by the ghost of Mateo Varela, a man he sent to death row twelve years ago on fabricated evidence. When the true killer confesses on his deathbed, Elias discovers that his own wife, Celeste, has known the truth all along—using her silence as a leash woven from guilt and memory. Set against the backdrop of a crumbling justice system in a fictional Latin American enclave under U.S. jurisdiction, this is a story where the prisoner has become the warden, and love is the cruelest sentence of all.
