The Gilded Coffin

In the gaslit streets of Valdoria, Professor Leopold Kier discovers that the law wears a golden mask. When the Stahlrad Consortium's defective train axles derail the Eldergrove Express, claiming the lives of sixty souls—including his daughter Clara—the courts, bought by industrial blood money, absolve the magnates of all sin. Consumed by a Dostoevskian fever of righteous indignation, Kier abandons his linguistic scholarship and descends into the forbidden archives of the Olmagari, a civilization his own ancestors helped annihilate. He steals the “Litany of the Ninth Breath,” a death-ritual he dismisses as primitive metaphor, and systematically executes the untouchable industrialists. But as the bodies mount, the stolen words begin to speak back. In the final cataclysm, Kier learns that the curse was never a tool for a righteous man—it is an ancient, indifferent hunger that devours both the executioner and the thief, proving that a society that forces a decent man to wield hellfire is already a living tomb.
