The Will Quarry

In 1936 Hankow, after the assassination of Nationalist strategist Yang Yung-tai is hastily ruled a traffic accident for an insurance payout, British-Chinese claims adjuster Julian Shen arrives to investigate. He finds a labyrinth of forged evidence and staged attempts on his own life. As the line between hunter and hunted dissolves, Julian realizes his every deduction has been implanted by a rival adjuster who treats minds as actuarial tables—calculating human will down to the last premium, and stripping it away.
