The Mercy Engine

In the fading coastal town of Port Bannock, reclusive watchmaker Elias Crane endures a series of break-ins by the Toller brothers, local addicts shielded by a complacent sheriff. When the law offers only thoughts and prayers, Crane converts his cluttered Victorian house into a clockwork death labyrinth. The resulting carnage spawns a civil suit—Jennings v. Voss et al—that lays bare a community addicted to the performance of pity but unwilling to rewrite a single statute.
