"The note?"

Okonkwo hesitated, which Dimond registered because she was not a woman who hesitated. "In her coat pocket. Left breast. Folded into thirds. It's... thorough."

She handed him an evidence bag. Through the plastic, Dimond examined the note. Written in blue ink on cream stationery, the handwriting neat and flowing, the kind of cursive they no longer taught in schools.

They walked together along the pedestrian path. The morning commuters had been rerouted, but a small crowd had gathered behind the tape. Some held phones aloft. "The Commissioner is half right."

"And which half do you think that is?"

Dimond didn't answer. Webb stood, brushing imaginary lint from his sleeve. "Close the jumper. Move on. That's not a suggestion."

He walked away without waiting for a response. Dimond watched him go, then pulled the microfiber cloth from his pocket and wiped the spot on the desk where Webb had sat. The fabric came away gray. He folded the cloth precisely and returned it to his pocket.

Two had been found alive. Seven had family circumstances that made suicide plausible. Five remained unexplained. Of those five, Dimond noticed a pattern.

Each of the five had, in the weeks before her disappearance, attended at least one event hosted by an organization called "Sovereign Hearts." The name appeared in financial records, social media posts, and, in one case, a journal entry that a grieving mother had shared with investigators.

Sovereign Hearts billed itself as a "personal empowerment seminar" for "women seeking deeper connection and authentic relationships." Its website featured stock photographs of diverse women laughing in sun-drenched rooms, and testimonials praising the transformative power of the program. The founder was listed as Julian Vane, a name that Dimond vaguely recognized. The complaint had been closed without action.

Dimond printed the complaint and the testimonials and the photographs. He arranged them on his desk in a grid, studying the faces of the missing women. In their photos, they looked hopeful. In their final messages, if there were final messages, they sounded exhausted.

He thought about the note. About the variations in letter formation. About the phrase "I forgive everyone who failed me." And he thought about the scuff marks on the concrete, the narrow heel, the dark water below.

The phone rang. It was Okonkwo.

"Tell me."

"She had bruising on her upper arms. Fingerprint-shaped. Someone held her hard enough to leave marks, sometime in the hour before she died."

Dimond was silent.

"Peter? You still there?"

"I'm here."

"What are you thinking?"

He looked at the grid of photographs on his desk. Five missing women. Five smiles. Five lives that had, somewhere along the way, intersected with a man who taught women how to be vulnerable.

"I'm thinking," Dimond said slowly, "that I need to find out what Sovereign Hearts really teaches."

He hung up and began to clean his desk, returning each paper to its proper folder, aligning the edges, wiping the surface until it gleamed under the fluorescent lights. And Peter Dimond, with his ironing board and his microfiber cloth and his stubborn refusal to accept the world as it was, had spent a lifetime preparing to prove that assumption wrong.

He walked toward the river, the cold wind sharp against his face, his shoes reflecting the pale streetlights. In his pocket, his fingers found the soft cloth, and he held it like a talisman.
