Kerala Nun Sexual Assault and Murder Case

In February 2025, a 27-year-old nun, Mariam Varghese, belonging to the Missionaries of Charity in Kollam district, Kerala, was found dead in her convent room. A post-mortem confirmed sexual assault and strangulation. The accused, Father Joseph Kurien, a visiting priest from a nearby parish, was arrested within 48 hours based on DNA evidence and CCTV footage showing him entering the convent. The crime sparked immediate outrage over the safety of nuns and alleged attempts by local church officials to delay reporting the incident. The Kerala government handed the case to the Crime Branch, and the victim's father, John Varghese, filed a formal complaint accusing the church hierarchy of obstruction. The case became a flashpoint for demands to end impunity for clerical offenders and to fast-track trials involving violence against women in religious spaces.

The trial began in the Kollam Fast Track Court in March 2025. Joseph Kurien was denied bail and charged with rape, murder, and destruction of evidence. As of mid-2026, the trial is ongoing, with key DNA and digital evidence still under judicial review. No final verdict has been delivered.

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India issued a public apology and announced new internal guidelines, though critics deem them insufficient.
